🎬Looker Studio: Creating Dynamic MySQL Reports for Data Visualization
Welcome to another Looker Studio tutorial. In this video, we will guide you through the process of connecting to a MySQL server using a data source and creating a report with that data.
To begin, visit the Star Bakery data set page, where you can find all the information needed to connect to the database.
Next, open Looker Studio and click on the "Create" button. Here, you have the option to create reports and data sources. You can create a report without creating a data source in advance, but for this tutorial, we will first create a data source to connect to the Star Bakery data set using MySQL.
Click on the "Data Source" button, and in the new window, you can connect to your data source using various available connectors. We will select "MySQL by Google" to connect to the MySQL database.
Provide the necessary information to connect to your MySQL server, including the server IP address, database name, username, and password, which you can find on the Star Bakery data set page. Once all the information is provided, click the "Authenticate" button.
After successful authentication, Looker Studio will display all the tables available in the selected database. Select the Star Bakery table and click on the "Connect" button to establish a connection.
Now that you are connected to the database, Looker Studio will show all the fields available in the selected table, each with its data type and default aggregation, which can be modified as needed.
To create additional fields and parameters, you can refer to our tutorial on "Looker Studio: Understanding the Essential Concepts and Techniques."
Feel free to change the name of the data source to something appropriate for your needs.
With the data source set up, you can now create a Looker Studio report. Click on the "Create Report" button and grant permission to add the data source to your report when prompted.
Now you have all the fields from your data source at your disposal to create visualizations in your report.
Let`s start by deleting the auto-generated table visual. Then, we will add a pie chart to display sales by product. You can define the grid size and use the "Snap to Grid" option to ensure perfect placement of visuals.
Replace the default "Record Count" metric with the "Total Price" field to visualize product sales.
Next, let`s duplicate the pie chart to display sales by salesperson and by order type. Adjust the dimensions accordingly to reflect the desired data.
Now, let`s add a combo chart to display sales and weight by date. Edit the date field to display only months and move one of the fields to the right axis through the style area.
For a scatter chart, Looker Studio has already added the required fields. No further changes are needed in this case.
Finally, complete your dashboard by adding a title using the text box visual. Customize the text and font size to create an appealing dashboard.
Your dashboard is now complete! Switch to view mode to see the final result.
