Data Modeling and Reporting in MS Excel using Power Pivot and Pivot Tables

Welcome to our MS Excel data modeling tutorial! In this session, we will guide you through the process of connecting various CSV files to your Microsoft Excel file and creating a comprehensive data model using Power Pivot.

To get started, make sure to download the dataset from the link provided in the comments section below the video. This dataset comprises multiple data tables, each with a unique ID, enabling seamless connections between tables and forming a relational database within Excel.

Once you have downloaded the files, extract them to your desired directory. Inside the zip folder, you’ll find several CSV files, each representing a distinct table. You can begin by opening a new Microsoft Office Excel file and naming it “bike store.” Follow the steps in the video to import these CSV files into your Excel file using the ‘Get Data from Text or CSV’ option.

Ensure that your data is correctly loaded into Excel. Pay attention to the column headings and ensure that numeric columns are loaded as numbers, not text. Excel provides previews of your data before loading, allowing you to identify and address any issues.

With all the tables imported, you can proceed to create a data model using Power Pivot. Connect the relevant columns (such as store ID, product ID, order ID, etc.) between the tables to establish relationships. These relationships form the foundation of your data model, enabling you to generate multi-dimensional pivot table reports.

In the video, we demonstrate how to create pivot tables based on this data model. You’ll learn how to organize your data by brands, categories, and stores, allowing you to analyze sales, stock quantities, prices, and discounts comprehensively.

Feel free to customize your reports by adding or removing fields, renaming columns, and formatting data as needed. Excel’s powerful features, coupled with a well-structured data model, empower you to create insightful and visually appealing reports for better decision-making.
