Power BI Parameters Tutorial: Create Dynamic Numeric Range & Fields Slicers

Learn how to use parameters in Power BI to create dynamic and interactive reports! This tutorial walks you through the creation and application of both numeric range parameters and fields parameters using a sample sales dataset. We start by importing data and setting up a basic dashboard with a column chart and a donut chart. You’ll then learn to create a numeric range parameter to act as a dynamic sales target filter. We’ll use this parameter in a custom measure to calculate performance (difference between sales and target) and visualize it using a gauge visual, allowing users to dynamically adjust the target and see the resulting sales shortfall or access.

Next, we dive into fields parameters, which allow you to add multiple fields and dynamically switch between them in your visuals. We’ll create a fields parameter that includes Month End, Product, and Sales Person. By replacing the static fields in our column and donut charts with this new parameter and setting the slicer to enforce single selection, you can switch the visual’s dimension—like viewing sales by product or by sales person—with a single click. This technique is a powerful way to display more dimensions on your existing charts without cluttering your dashboard with extra visuals. Follow along to make your Power BI reports more flexible and user-friendly!
