Welcome to this Power BI tutorial where we’ll guide you through the process of hosting your Power BI reports on your own server. To achieve this, we’ll utilize Power BI Report Server, which can be conveniently downloaded from the Microsoft website. Simply navigate to the website, click on “advanced download options,” and then select the download button. Ensure you choose both the Power BI Report Server and the Power BI Desktop setup. It’s crucial to select the January 2025 version of Power BI Desktop, as this specific version is designed for compatibility with the January 2025 Power BI Report Server. Using mismatched versions may lead to compatibility issues. While you might have other Power BI Desktop versions installed, it’s not necessary to uninstall them to proceed.
Once the download is complete, you can begin the Power BI Report Server installation. Click “install” and then either provide a product key or opt for a free version. Two free options are available: an evaluation version with a 180-day expiration and a developer version for unlimited testing but not for production use. After selecting your preferred option and accepting the license terms, continue with the installation, choosing your desired installation location. The configuration of the Power BI Report Server is a critical step that follows the installation. You’ll need to specify the server name and report server instance, then connect to initiate the server. Subsequent configuration steps involve setting up the service account (often requiring no changes), configuring the web service URL (where you can name your report server and select IP address and TCP port), and importantly, configuring the database. This one-time database setup involves connecting to your SQL Server, creating a report service database, and testing the connection to ensure successful communication. Finally, you’ll configure the web portal URL. Once properly set up, you can access your hosted reports. #PowerBI #ReportServer #SelfHosting #Tutorial #BusinessIntelligence #DataVisualization #Microsoft #ServerSetup #BIReports #TechTutorial
